Remember that female Muslim doctor in Detroit who was the first doctor arrested in the United States for practicing female genital mutilation? Appearing in court, she defended her barbarity by claiming it was a “religious removal” and was not mutilation at all.
Dr. Jumana Nagarwala was arrested and charged last week with allegedly performing female genital mutilation on girls as young as six. One seven-year-old, according to the criminal complaint, could barely walk after the procedure, and felt pain all the way to her ankle.
The criminal complaint alleges Nagarwala performed the FGM procedures in a “medical clinic” outside of the hospital. The complaint also states that the young girls were told they were being taken on a “girls trip.” After they arrived, they were told they needed to go the doctor for a “stomach ache” and FGM was performed to “get the germs out.”
After Nagarwala’s arrest, Acting Assistant Attorney General Blanco said, “According to the complaint, despite her oath to care for her patients, Dr. Nagarwala is alleged to have performed horrifying acts of brutality on the most vulnerable victims. The Department of Justice is committed to stopping female genital mutilation in this country, and will use the full power of the law to ensure that no girls suffer such physical and emotional abuse.”
